A couple of weeks ago, while in Foxboro to prepare a story on Milford\'s Michael Videira, we caught up with Edgaras Jankasukas, the former Lithuanian international who spent a few seasons in Portugal.
He originally signed with Benfica but then moved to rival FC Porto, where, under the guidance of Jose Mourinho, he helped the northern side win not only the league title, but the coveted Champions League trophy as well.
Jankauskas still retains fond memories of his stay in Portugal.
\"Portugal? Ah, I love that country, I spent some good years there and we won many titles with Porto. I miss Portugal a great deal and I go back there whenever I have the chance. I still have a lot of friends there, it\'s a marvelous country,\" Jankauskas replied when asked about his experience in Portugal. As a result he tries to keep up with what his former teams do, adding that \"with the internet, I\'m always connected with what\'s going on in Portugal, with Porto, Benfica, Portuguese soccer.\"
A standout goal scorer, Jankauskas is still adjusting to soccer in MLS. In perfect Portuguese, when asked to compare MLS with European leagues, Jankauskas replied: \"Soccer is a more popular sport in Europe, because here they have basketball, American football, so soccer is not as popular here as in Europe, but things here are good when it comes to the organization, the fields. The league is not of the same caliber as in Portugal or Spain, but the players are good, so it\'s not easy\".
Portugal, in addition to the weather and the friendly people, is also well known for its delicious food. Jankauskas still remembers.
\"I know that there are a lot of Portuguese people in Massachusetts,\" Jankauskas said. \"I remember that when I came here with Benfica we went to Fall River, the stadium was all red, so there are a lot of Portuguese people around and I hope that some day I can go to Fall River or Providence where they have Portuguese restaurants, because I miss the Portuguese food\".
Since he has established himself and has began to show flashes of the scoring ability that made him a popular player in Europe, Jankauskas will certainly have plenty of opportunities to come to this area and taste lots of Portuguese food.
