An AfD member in Uffenheim set fire to his own car, according to a report by the Central Franconia Police Headquarters, and attempted the blame on left-wing political groups. The man has since confessed to starting the fire and forging an alleged threatening letter from Antifa, Nuremberg police announced.
Following the fire and the owner's statements, the State Security Service initially investigated due to the suspicion of a politically motivated crime. After the investigation in that direction proved fruitless, the police increasingly focused on the owner. Finally, during the analysis of the alleged threatening letter, striking similarities were discovered between the letter and the man's handwriting.
In a press release dated February 8, the AfD itself described the incident as a "cowardly attack" against a party member. A member of the board of the Fürth/Neustadt an der Aisch district association told the German Press Agency that disciplinary action against the member might now have to be considered.
